From an unloved in-house app to a tool for over 1,000 drivers.

How ODYSYS AG had its D3 driver app rebuilt with .NET MAUI, offline-capable, in nine months, as an agile fixed-price project. And why the app was only the beginning.

The starting point

A good idea, built in-house, and still not good enough.

ODYSYS AG has been developing the industry solution D3 for the crane and heavy-load industry for over 25 years. So that drivers could view their orders digitally, ODYSYS had built a first version of a driver app in-house.

The idea was right, the result was not: app development is not part of an industry-solution vendor’s core business. Design and usability fell short of expectations, and an app that drivers do not enjoy using does not digitize any processes.

ODYSYS drew the right conclusion: an external design agency for the UI/UX concept, a specialized partner for the delivery. The technology decision deliberately landed on .NET MAUI, because there was already long-standing .NET experience in-house, and the code was later meant to be maintained and taken over internally.

The journey with Quality Bytes

Nine months, an agile fixed-price project.

Step 1

An agile fixed-price project instead of a blind flight

On the basis of the design prototype we set up an agile fixed-price project: planning certainty on cost, but with SCRUM enough flexibility to integrate design and feature changes during development.

How we plan apps: the App Roadmap →
Step 2

Offline-first for everyday life on the construction site

Crane and access-platform drivers work where network coverage is not guaranteed. All captured data is therefore stored locally and synchronized automatically with D3 as soon as there is a connection again, for continuous work even at remote sites.

Step 3

Demanding design on young technology

.NET MAUI 7 was still young at the start of the project; components like a bottom sheet were missing. We developed our own UI building blocks, integrated Prism for the complex role-based navigation and Syncfusion for PDF editing and signatures directly inside the app.

Step 4

First release: the most important processes first

Time tracking, checklists to D3 specifications, an integrated document scanner (which replaced a separate scanner app) and dispatcher feedback, the functions that immediately improve a driver’s day.

Step 5

Ongoing development

Since the first release we have continuously developed the app further: digital PDF signing in the app, reactivation of cancelled orders, images and documents in the job-completion assistant, each with transfer to D3.

The result

An economic milestone, and a sales argument.

1,000+active drivers, mark passed at the end of 2024
100 %offline-capable, with automatic D3 synchronization

The new app won people over with modern design, noticeably shorter loading times and intuitive operation. That let ODYSYS retain existing customers more strongly and win new ones in a targeted way, and the app went from a pain point to a selling argument for the industry solution.

“The driver app is a strong argument in our sales today. It closes the gap between dispatch and driver and makes D3 even more valuable for our customers in daily use.”
Andreas Bender · Board Member, ODYSYS AG

And then? The app became the whole journey.

The driver app was the entry point into the collaboration. Today we are modernizing the entire industry solution with ODYSYS: D3 is becoming SKAI 4, reimagined on the web. To the SKAI 4 case study →
